Traditional Indian Sari (History of the Sari)

Have you ever wondered about the history of the Saree, traditional Saree also spelled Sari is a cultural icon. It’s fabric is 4.5 meters to 8 meters (5 to 9 yards )in length. It is believed to have originated in 2800-1800 BC in the Indus Valley.

The word ‘Sari’ evolved from the word ‘Sattika’ Cotton was cultivated by women in the Indian subcontinent in the 5th millennium BC. The word Sari means ‘cloth’ in Sanskrit. Choli evolved from the ancient Stanapatta, a tenth century literary work by Kalhana, states that the choli from the Deccan was introduced under the royal order in Kashmir.

There are more than 80 ways to wear a Sari. The most common way is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with the loose end of the drape to be worn over the shoulder baring the midriff. However the sari can be worn any way you like, provided you have enough length for the sari to be worn. There are so many different variations of Style, different areas in India have there unique way of draping the sari.

Most women prefer to wear the sari, because it is loose fitting and they are free to move around as their duties require them to. Many of the luxury hotels in India require women to wear the sari as their uniform. Politician’s in India most notably Indira Gandhi and her daughter in law Sonia Gandhi wear the saree, most housewife’s prefer the saree for the above mentioned reason.
